At the base of the peak which houses the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, a facility run by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, a visitors center affords amateur astronomers and families information about the observatory, its research and astronomy. Two models of the observatory's multiple mirror telescopes are displayed, along with other exhibits like a topographical map of the region and a history of the development of the telescope. Some Saturday evenings see special star shows come to the center, complete with lectures and telescope viewings. The observatory is atop Mount Hopkins, one of the tallest mountains in the Santa Rita Range, located about 10 miles east of the town of Amado, far from the light pollution of cities.
Open Mon. - Fri. 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Adults $7; Children (6-12) $2.50.
